William (II)

William Lothian, my father, was brought up on the family homestead at Elmside in Bristol Township, taught in the local schools, worked for the Gilmour and Hughson Lumber Company at Chelsea, Quebec, and in the eighties entered the employ of the Upper Ottawa Improvement Company, the organization of Upper Ottawa lumber barons. William became the Companys agent at Bryson, Quebec, and was responsible for the Companys works and buildings along the Ottawa River from Mellons Boom above Fort Coulonge to Portage du Fort, Quebec. He met. and married Maggie Hanran of Inverness, Quebec, who was teaching in the Protestant School at Bryson. Stricken with heart disease in 1913, William moved his family to Ottawa in August, 19Th, and died there in October of the year following. My mother lived in Ottawa until her death in June, 1959.

The William Lothians had five children. The eldest, Jean, died of pneumonia at the age of a year and a half, and is buried at Bryson. The only son, William Fergus, was educated in Bryson primary school, Shawville High School, and Ottawa (Lisgar) Collegiate, from which he matriculated in 1917. Following graduation he entered the Public Service of Canada, and retired in December 1968, following a career of 51 years in the Department of the Interior and successive Departments. On retirement, he was Assistant Chief (emeritus) of the National Parks Service of Canada. At present he is engaged in writing a history of the National Parks of Canada. Fergus married Doris Yarrow of Ottawa in 1930. They have two children. Jean Lothian, born 1932, graduated from Royal Victoria Hospital in 1954, and married in the same year Hugo Jenny, formerly of Zurich, Switzerland. In 1967, she obtained a degree in Nursing Education and is employed in Riverside Hospital, Ottawa. The Jennys have one son, Eric. William R.J. Lothian, born 1946, attends Carleton University, Ottawa, from which he expects to graduate in Arts in 1969.

Marjorie Lothian, after high school graduation, worked in the Federal Department of Immigration, Ottawa, and married Clinton S. Rockwood of Great Bend, N.Y. in 1928. She lived in a number of cities in the United States, later divorced Rockwood, and entered social service work. At present she is employed as a consultant in a day centre at East Orange, New Jersey, where she resides with her daughter, Mrs. Emily Healy. Emmy Lou Rockwood graduated from Smith College, married Frank Healy whom she later divorced, and teaches in the public school system of East Orange. She has two sons, Frank and Laurence, both at home.

Frances Lothian, following high school graduation, trained as a nurse in Binghamton, N.Y., and married Dr. Theodore Proper of Schoharie, N.Y. in 1931. He has practiced medicine in Newburgh, N.Y. forrnany years. The three daughters of Dr. and Mrs. Proper are all married and have families. [4argaret, married to John Powell lives at Palos Verdes Estates, California; Susan, married to Dr. Terry Northrup (in U.S. Army) normally lives in Cleveland, Ohio. Theodora, married to Richard Siragusa of Chicago, Ill., lives in Lake Forest, Illinois.

Eleanor Lothian, after high school graduation in Ottawa, worked in several investment security companies in Ottawa, before marrying Scott M. Foster, (W.C.-R.C.A.F.) in 1942. The Fosters had two children, Margaret, a graduate of Royal Victoria School of Nursing, married William Woodrow of Ottawa in 1964, and presently lives at Deep River, Ontario. They have two children. Catriona recently graduated from the Shaw Secretarial School in Toronto, where she is employed. The Fosters were divorced in 1964. Eleanor died very suddenly in December, 1965, and Scott Foster died in May, 1967.
